Dairy Queen ~

Noble and the McCulloughs went on to open the first Dairy Queen store in 1940 in Joliet, Illinois. While this Dairy Queen has not been in operation since the 1950s, the building still stands at 501 N Chicago St. as a city-designated landmark.

KFC - Kentucky Fried Chicken ~

KFC was founded by Colonel Harland Sanders, an entrepreneur who began selling fried chicken from his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, during the Great Depression. Sanders identified the potential of the restaurant franchising concept, and the first "Kentucky Fried Chicken" franchise opened in Utah in 1952.

McDonald's ~

Dick and Mac McDonald moved to California to seek opportunities they felt unavailable in New England. Failing in the movie business, they subsequently proved successful in operating drive-in restaurants. In 1948 they took a risk by streamlining their operations and introducing their Speedee Service System featuring 15 cent hamburgers. The restaurant’s success led the brothers to begin franchising their concept—nine becoming operating restaurants.

Red Barn ~

The Red Barn restaurant was a fast-food restaurant chain founded in 1961 in Springfield, Ohio, by Don Six, Martin Levine, and Jim Kirst. In 1963, the small chain was purchased by Richard O. Kearns, operated as Red Barn System, with the offices moving briefly to Dayton, Ohio and in August 1964 to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. During the late 1960s United Servomation, also called Servomation, bought the Red Barn chain. In 1978 United Servomation merged with the City Investing Company's GDV division which also owned the Motel 6 motel chain. Only interested in real estate, construction, and financial services the new owners ceased advertising for the chain along with allowing the franchise leases to expire with the last of the leases expiring around 1988. At its peak, Red Barn had 300–400 restaurants in 19 states, as well as outlets in southern Ontario, elsewhere in Canada, and Australia.

Following the shutdown of operations, most of the Red Barn buildings were converted for other uses. A few of the chain restaurants were renamed "The Farm" in various states and continued serving the same menu items available when they were under their Red Barn franchise. There were two locations under "The Farm" name in Racine, Wisconsin and Bradford, Pennsylvania that are serving the same menu items. The Bradford location closed for a brief period in 2014 from a small fire and permanently closed in December 2015. Currently, the Racine, Wisconsin store is the only location that is still operating. The Australian Red Barn stores were sold and converted into McDonald's locations.

The Red Barn was one of the chains that I could take or leave. The food was good and the prices very fair. I think that probably I ate elsewhere most of the time because other restaurants were closer.

There are still several of the old Red Barn locations standing that have been converted to other businesses. We have no less than five in our area. One is a cell phone dealer. Another is a real estate office.

Carpenter's Drive-In ~

Harry B. Carpenter founded the Carpenter’s chain with his brother Charles and operated many locations in Los Angeles including: Sunset and Vine, Wilshire and Western, Wilshire and La Cienega, Wilshire and Vine, Pico and Vermont, Silver Lake and Glendale and Sunset and Virgil.

At Carpenter's, it was all about the carhops. One of the first Drive-Ins to use them.

The carhops dressed like movie actresses. It was all glitz in 1936..

No paper cups and paper bowls here. Mainly because they had not been invented yet.

Church's Chicken ~ Texas Chicken

Church's Chicken is an American chain of fast food restaurants specializing in fried chicken, also trading outside North America as Texas Chicken. The chain was founded as Church's Fried Chicken To Go by George W. Church Sr., on April 17, 1952, in San Antonio, Texas, across the street from The Alamo.

They had real problems when, at one of their locations, the floor in the kitchen collapsed and seriously injured workers.

But, all in all, it was a good place to eat. Even the Reagans ate the food.

Their logo changed a few times.

But they had some cool novelties. Like this Church's Chicken mug that you could get free with a beverage fill up. Or you could buy them.

The Cola Coller that you could bring in and fill for a small fee.

And, of course, the ever popular ball cap. Which the employees got free.

Jack In The Box ~

In 1951, a businessman named Robert O. Peterson opened the first Jack in the Box® restaurant in San Diego on the main east-west thoroughfare leading into the city.

Stan’s was a chain of diners throughout Los Angeles.

Little Tavern Hamburgers ~

Little Tavern Shops was founded in 1927 in Louisville, Kentucky by Missouri native Harry F. Duncan. The first location in Washington DC opened in 1928 and the first in Baltimore, MD opened in 1930, expanding into the Maryland and Virginia suburbs in the later 1930s.

Yes, their "celebrities", all glitz and Hollywood. But when they stuff a burger in their puss, they look just like the rest of us. Don't believe me? Go back and look at Cameron Diaz again!

Ponderosa Steak House was a great place to eat. It was buffet style and the steaks were made to order. It wasn't a real Friday night for a family unless you went to Ponderosa for dinner.

The Shoe Drive-Thru ~

Around 1945, the idea of a drive-thru for shoes was toyed with.

You drove up and, without leaving your car, shoe salesmen would come out and fit you for new shoes.

You could relax and read the newspaper while you waited in your car for the salesman to get the right shoes for you.

If you didn't want to be served in your car, you could come in and be waited on. No food at this drive-in, just new shoes.

So, we covered a lot of drive-ins and other style restaurants. Possibly you saw many that you remembered. Probably a few, at least, that you didn't. Some you never heard of and many that your still going to.
